1055hrs on Tuesday 2nd June 2009 and DBR 1226 and DFT 7322 are waiting at Swanson for DCP 4663 to clear the single track before departing for Whangarei with a lengthy 126 Freight, complete with ETR 17, the Radio Test Van, at the rear. This van is a former FM class guards van (caboose), so looks right at home on the rear of the train!

  • Notice the fred on the radio van. Is that permenant?

  • It would have just been on for that particular train. All freight trains must have one, including when the test van is on the rear.

  • Good to see a van at the rear, but by the look of it, is this used for something other that what a van was used for in days gone by, nice Video.

  • Radio Test Van. Went to Whangarei on this train on Tuesday, then to Otiria on Wednesday. It covers most of the country every couple of years or so.

  • Thanks Geoff, thought it strange to have a van at the rear these days, gr8 video though. Jay

  • Thanks Jay. I've uploaded a couple more videos today of the van returning, also on the back of its train (this time with tail lights flashing).
