Legendary Thani by Dr. T.K.Murthy

This is a legendary thani avarthanam (rhythmic solo) by Dr. T.K.Murthy for the song "Nagalingam Bhajeham" (Muttuswami Dikshitar) in raga Shankarabharanam set to Adi tala. Sourced from a concert by Dr. S.Ramanathan at the Music Academy, Madras, celebrating Muttuswami Dikshitar Day on 8th October, 1984. The violinist is Sri M.S.Gopalakrishnan. The speciality about this thani, apart from the speed and clarity of strokes, is how he covers all the 5 nadai-s or gati-s (Chaturashra, Tishra, Mishra, Khanda & Sankeerna; in that order) within a span of just 11 and odd minutes! Truly a genius of our times. We are all fortunate indeed to live in the same time as him. This grand old sire of mridangam continues to mesmerise even today at the advanced age of 88 years!
