PORTSMOUTH -- Agents with the Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control went undercover Thursday to find people selling alcohol to underage buyers. You have to be 21 or older to buy alcohol.

So, to see if businesses are complying, a minor was sent in with her real identification with an agent watching.

The ABC says more than 90% of the time, clerks check IDs, but at a Walmart in Portsmouth, the clerk didn't check her age and sold her alcohol.

"The clerk never requested to see ID from the underage buyer. She run up the sale, paid, and walked out of the store," the agent said.

The clerk faces a misdemeanor charge and Walmart will be cited and face fines.

Walmart officials say the company has a strict policy for its employees about alcohol sales and adds what happened today was not a reflection of standards in place.

That store was the only one cited for underage alcohol sales during "tests" in Portsmouth and Chesapeake.

  • Bah. i should just move to the netherlands, its only 16 there. 21.. thats bullshit. kids are going to get it anyway, they will never be able to stop it. Law enforcement's excuse is that were all going to drink and drive and kill people. but only the completely retarded kids do this. ive been piss drunk to the point where i dont even know whats going on, yet i still know enough to not do drugs or drive, or dangerous things. Id settle for 18. maybe they should judge our common sense, not age...

  • @slicknickxp better to be safe than sorry

  • @choppaholic26 NO its not! The law is the law! 21 means 21! If a clerk sells alcohol to a minor they will be most likely fired from their job and the business gets a fine and also gets thier liquor license suspended! When the Wal-Mart cashier rang that item up a message would have poped up saying "Is customer 21? when that pops up the ID should have been checked

  • @saviorkk The law in NY states that a minor can drink alcohol with their parents permission at the home. That why it is not illegal for a minor to have a glass of wine with dinner. But I guess if you were a minor and you parents didnt care if you got all sloshed up at home they can legally supply you with alcohol so long as you drink it at the house,(your home residence) the parent cant serve alchol to you if you are at a freinds house.

  • A Safeway store in Castro Valley, CA had three underage sales of booze and they got their liquor license suspended for 45 days. Now they check everyone's ID, even if they're 82 years old.

  • fuck them they justt let us drink ffs

  • @KVrael15 yeah and i heard in the U.S smoking is 19, in australia its only illegal for under 16 year olds to buy smokes, but under 16s are sitll allowed to smoke them, and our drinking age is 18 :D

  • Id say lower the drinkin age or raise the age of enlistement in the military.

  • This is Bullshit fucking faggets!!!

  • haha I'm 15 and here in Belgium I can buy alcohol whenever I want because they barely ask your age and if they do I just tell them I'm 16, sometimes even 18 for strong alcohol ( yes, in Belgium a 16 year old can legally buy alcohol :D )

  • I am 17 and in the UK you have to be 18. I have been served everytime in the big supermarkets. :) I also admit to selling alcohol to under 18s when I worked as a cashier for a small store.
