What is the IOU?


The IOU is a series of free courses arranged into an organized program of study wherein students who follow the recommended sequence will embark on a study program guided by Dr. Bilal Philips himself. The program provides an introduction to the basic Islamic sciences and insight into the manhaj or way of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) as embodied in the Q! ur'aan a nd authentic Sunnah in accordance with the understanding of the first generation. Some of the courses will be on topics of immediate and practical relevance to the students. The free course of study will also introduce students who wish to pursue an accredited BA or MA in Islamic Studies to the methodology of the BAIS program.


Dr Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips is the founder of Islamic Online University. He was born in Jamaica, but grew up in Canada, where he accepted Islam in 1972. He completed a diploma in Arabic and a B.A. from the College of Islamic Disciplines (Usool ad-Deen) at the Islamic University of Madeenah in 1979. At the University of Riyadh, College of Education, he completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology in 1985, and in the department of Islamic Studies at the University of Wales, he completed a Ph.D. in Islamic Theology in 1994.


He is the author of more than 30 books on Islam, besides having translated six others and edited four others while also representing organizations like the Dar al Fatah Press in Sharjah (Director of the Foreign Literature Department), Discover Islam in Dubai (Director), Sharjah TV Channel Two and Satellite (Producer and Presenter of Islamic Programs), Ajman TV Channel Four, and Saudi TV Channel Two. He also appears on Peace TV, which is a 24-hour Islamic satellite TV channel broadcasted to many countries around the world.
