Scientists warn that our oceans are in danger from pollution, overfishing and habitat destruction. At the (Monterey) aquarium, we're working on three ways to make a difference: protecting key wildlife, preserving vulnerable marine areas and promoting seafood caught and farmed in sustainable ways.
But we can't do it alone--we need your help."
We need to act in 2008 to protect our oceans.
Ask your representatives to protect our coasts and oceans!
Speak up for marine protected areas in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary! California recently created state marine protected areas close to shore. Now we need to extend that protection offshore into federal waters.
Use a postcard below to write to Paul Michel and tell him you support a network of marine protected areas in the Sanctuary's offshore waters.

Join our action team here!
People made a difference in 2007 - what's next for 2008?
A growing chorus of voices is speaking up for the oceans, and it includes members of the aquarium's Ocean Action Team. In 2007, the Ocean Action Team pushed for - and accomplished - important advances in ocean protection. In 2008, we'll do even more.
Using the aquarium's Seafood Watch guide, you've asked restaurants and markets for sustainable seafood - and they've listened.
In 2008, keep using the current guide to choose ocean-safe seafood. Ask merchants where their fish comes from and how it was caught. Urge them to serve only seafood on the green and yellow lists. And share the guides with friends and family, too.
Letter from thousands of people encouraged the state of California to adopt a new network of protected areas along our Central Coast.
What can you do? Join our Ocean Action Team and we'll let you know when more letters to the governor and your representatives will help create ocean protection in California.
Otters have extra protections thanks to a state law passed in 2006. You helped by asking legislators to vote for the bill. What can you do in 2008?
Part of the 2006 law addresses toxoplasmosis, a disease carried by cat feces that's killing sea otters. You can help save sea otters: set up litter boxes for your outdoor cats and dispose of all cat feces in the trash.
Giving fish and wildlife protected areas will let them recover and thrive again:
Fishermen aren't catching as much as they used to; divers aren't seeing as many inkds of ocean animals. To turn this around, scientists propose closing a few key areas to fishing so habitats and wildlife can recover.
Join us to help restore California's rich diversity of marine wildlife and abundance of fish: speak up for these safe havens where sea life can grow and breed.
Three things you can do:
Your bite has might - the seafood you eat makes a difference for the oceans:
Some kinds of seafood are dangerously overfished; others are caught or farmed in ways that damage the oceans. But if people demand ocean-safe seafood, markets and restaurants will offer it.
Take our [find a] Seafood Watch guide and use it when you shop or dine - and pass it on.
Protecting otters, sharks and other key species benefits ocean environments
As top predators, sea otters play a critical role in keeping kelp forests healthy, Sharks, tunas and sea turtles play equally important roles in their marine communities.
By protecting these key species, we can help maintain the health of the oceans where they live.
We need to act in 2008 [ and beyond ] to protect our oceans

@jezzaskates To: "what organization is this?" The Monterey Aquarium is actually extremely active, educating the public to the danger from pollution, overfishing and habitat destruction: "At the (Monterey) aquarium, we're working on three ways to make a difference: protecting key wildlife, preserving vulnerable marine areas and promoting seafood caught and farmed in sustainable ways.
But we can't do it alone--we need your help."
Thanks for watching and commenting!
