Does anyone know how do you type messages with the T9 turned off ?

Do the buttons are being pressed wither left or right to get corresponding letters?

but I'm just wondering how difficult it is for someone used to the "standard T9" to switch to half-qwerty?

I'm quite fast on T9, but I kinda like this phone...any pointers?
