Transcript: "This cute, little bird is the black-capped chickadee. It is found in Canada, Alaska and the northern United States and is the state bird of Maine and Massachusetts.

It is generally a permanent resident of this cooler climate and has adapted well. On cold winter nights, these birds reduce their body temperatures by 10 to 12 degrees Celsius to conserve energy.

In the summer, they feed on insects, but in the winter they ADAPT their diet to seeds and berries.

The chickadee is named after its familiar call which is a complex song used to communicate threats from predators and to coordinate movement amongst the group.

It is closely related to the Carolina chickadee its southern cousin - and is virtually indistinguishable. The only way to tell them apart is to listen to the difference in their songs.

If you want to attract chickadees to your bird feeder black oil sunflower seed should do the trick."

  • We hand feed Chickadees and Nuthatches all the time, it's become a favorite hobby for us. Your mini documentary is awesome. How about making one for Nuthatches as well? I wish I could see baby chickadees....but they are nowhere to be seen. cheers from Canada

  • How do you get chickadees in your yard what do they eat and how to attract them cause i only get cute little sparrows...

  • @powerofsonic I don't know. I guess I'm just lucky to have them.

  • we have a pair nesting in a box my dad made last year that had contained house wrens that year, but the chickadees took over this year. They sure are a wonder to behold!

I've got some great pictures of them this year.

  • @JDvorak2009 Maybe you should make a photo montage to music for Youtube. You can post it as a video response to this video.

  • @powerofsonic Well, it depends a lot on 1) where you live 2) what type of feeders you have 3) what type of feeders you have. If you live in the middle of the city, it'll take some time for chickadees to come, particularly when there isn't many trees around. In any case, they like black-oil sunflower seeds (buy it bags with only this type of seed--avoid "wild bird" mixes) and suet best.

  • @powerofsonic they like suet, those square mesh styled feeders. They also like peanut butter and blackoil sunflowers are the most popular seeds that attract them.

  • @powerofsonic they like suet (love it!) peanut butter if smeared on trees helps too. Their favorite food is the black oil sunflower seeds. They also like peanuts.

  • i've shot 3 of these

  • What kind of bird is that larger red one that joins the Chickadees for snack time?

  • 0:32 Ohai Thar.
