This man does at least provide one key note to those viewing: you can't expect to get proper art training from a standard university. For the most part the programs are garbage, and how they've become accredited is simply a testament to how little America actually cares about the arts.

Paint the background first. Always.
Doing it this way messes with the eye and you lose the proper sense of depth and distance.
