The first part of the Chess Records Story. A four parter detailing the development of the legendary Chicago record label. If you like this kind of stuff, check out the channel for privatefender. There's a heap of good music material like this.
@laughingtiger123 My understanding of "liberal atmosphere" in this case is that it means there was a place for blacks where they wouldn't be treated as badly as they had been in the South. Liberal here refers to the racial outlook of the population in the North (very generally speaking, of course).
Sunnyland Slim (Albert Luandrew) was signed to Aristocrat before Muddy Waters was and brought Muddy to Leonard Chess. Muddy was driving a delivery truck, Sunnyland wanted him to play guitar for a recording he was doing and went looking for him. After finding Muddy out doing deliveries Sunnyland told him it was an emergency, something had happened to his mother and he had to go with Sunny. He took him to the recording studio. Sunnyland told me this himself.
Wait... blacks came north for a "Liberal Atmosphere"? That's left wing horseshit. No, they came for the manufacturing jobs that were plentiful. And, hopefully, to not be beaten and abused.
