Buxton School, North Buxton, ONT - School Life (1)

So on May 4th 2008, I visited Buxton National Historic Site and Museum in North Buxton, Ontario, Canada.

This one-room classroom used to be a grade school called Buxton School until 1968 (I might take a note incorrectly so that I am not 100% sure!), then until later converted to an integral part of the National Historic Site, this building was mothballed for decades. This class-room is the only school remaining in Canada that was built by slaves prior to the Civil War.

An interior was retrofitted to original style with the consultation of Parks Canada. Pretty neat heating (coal stove) and desks. I don't know a name of this stove so if someone know, please let me know.

This video is an excerpt from the tour given by this curator/history interpreter lady. She still does farming in the community and engages history research.

After reviewing history of The Underground Railroad and slave trade between Africa, Americas and Europa, at this point the lecture is primarily focused on history of the abolitionism movement in Canada and all-black school in Buxton Settlement and exceptional performance of students, many students went to the University of Toronto after compilation of high school. Some returned to the United States and became prominent figures in academia, judiciary and politics.

As a portrait in the room indicates this school later become a multiracial integrated school.

We were supposed to take a mock lesson of grade 7 level of 1950s(?), yet the content of arithmetic textbook under the desk is surprisingly not so trivial.

As usual, I was sitting in back row, this is a designated location for 'backbencher', so typical of sleep-deprived and under-motivated student. Hahaha!!
