As a black, this movie is kind of disturbing. Mookie didn't do the right thing at all. The right thing he should have done is stop Buggin Out and Radio Raheem when they went to confront Sal at the pizzeria.
As black folks it's our duty to stop ignorant bastards like Buggin Out and Raheem from unleashing their stupidity.
It's Sal's pizzeria. He can do what the f*** he wants. Mookie did do a clever thing though by focusing the crowd on destroying the store instead of killing Sal and his sons.

I think what's genius is that Lee didn't make his characters absolute. Mookie seems like a pretty mellow guy and then he goes and does what he does. Sal loves the neighborhood and the people, but when he's pushed past the point, he freaks out. Even Pino has more than one side to him. People can say, "Well, those characters aren't consistent..." and I would say that that is what makes them believable, because people aren't consistent in their thoughts and actions, either.

I don’t get it. Was I supposed to see Mookie as anything but a worthless and unthankful asshole?

He said it wasn't cause you were black that you didn't own property. It was because you were lazy and didn't fight for your respect.
So I'm agreeing with the comment above.
Buggin' Out was full of hate. He refused to see that there was a way to better his community. And that not all the problems were related to whites, but that African Americans have to take control of their destiny and move in a positive direction - build up their community - instead of resorting to violence - the riot.

Remember that scene with the three men who sit on the corner? And the one in pink was complaining about how the Korean's step right off the boat and was already owning a buisness? And one of the men said they couldn't have done what the Koreans had done cause their were black? Remember that scene? That was the most poignant scene for me because of what Sweet Dick Willie said.

Thats what Spike Lee wants you to feel. He wants us black people to "WAKE UP!" to the nonsense that is going on and he wants white people to "DO THE RIGHT THING" or maybe your restaurant will get torn up etc etc lol

As a black person*..I was typing fast, chill out. YT comments are non-editable.
I was referring to the movie title in relation to the events that transpired that day. Spike Lee wants to make us believe all the characters that day made mistakes that led to that intense climax. My argument is that some people really made it bad i.e Radio Raheem, Buggin ... I think Sal is the only person that did the right thing that day. He was angry. I would have done the exact same thing as him.

As a black what? Man or woman? How is it disturbing? It is about racism that Blacks and Latinos go thru and stil to this day. How is it disturbing? It's reality. You're missing the whole point of the movie.
