Haha at the taxi, that happened to me so many times trying to hitch out of the middle of Shibuya.
Tips on getting out of Tokyo: get a metro to Yoga (the beginning point of the highway) and stand at the McDonalds parking place
Or take a train to Ebina and walk about 15 min. to the Ebina service area.
The business man had some pretty good tips too!

Hitch-hiking, one of the world greatest ways of moving. They are right, the people are the real journey. Having hitch hiked in japan, india, the middle east and europe I say: GO FOR IT! :D, I haven't had a bad day yet.
