M62B35 Ticking

M62B35 engine noise, coming from the passenger side rocker cover, very loud ticking.

It's the VANOS units.

My E38 740i M62TU was exactly the same until I changed the two VANOS units. You can't fix them as they are sealed and have to be swapped for new ones. Now she's nice and quiet.

yes, this is correct. I've changed chain tensioners and other stuff on mine, but the problem persists. As long as it doens't throw a CEL, it doesn't bother me. But when it does, i'm going to change both of them, too bad they cost approx. 450 euros each :D

Have the same noise on a 2001 740iL. Changed the tensioners & put thicker oil & the noise didnt go away. How much did it cost you to change the Vanos? is it a big job? I really would like to keep the car. Thanks. Carlos

mine too! anyone know what this is??? I thought it might be the pulleys after i took a good look around the engine bay earlier today, but cant be sure.
