  • It's the VANOS units.

My E38 740i M62TU was exactly the same until I changed the two VANOS units. You can't fix them as they are sealed and have to be swapped for new ones. Now she's nice and quiet.

  • yes, this is correct. I've changed chain tensioners and other stuff on mine, but the problem persists. As long as it doens't throw a CEL, it doesn't bother me. But when it does, i'm going to change both of them, too bad they cost approx. 450 euros each :D

  • Have the same noise on a 2001 740iL. Changed the tensioners & put thicker oil & the noise didnt go away. How much did it cost you to change the Vanos? is it a big job? I really would like to keep the car. Thanks. Carlos

  • lol it sounds like diesel :P

  • mine too! anyone know what this is??? I thought it might be the pulleys after i took a good look around the engine bay earlier today, but cant be sure.

  • :O! That sounds JUST like my car!
