This is a very old dulcimer. Made by one of the first pioneers of the mountain dulcimer, Mr Edward Thomas. Here it is played by Ehukai Teves from Hawaii.
Here Teves plays an original tune he wrote, "Dulcimerville". Dulcimer festival that happens annually in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
It belongs the the Ritchie family of Kentucky.
I love it! Is that dulcimer an origional J. E. Thomas, of Bath Co. Kentucky, dulcimer? If so, I would love to see some close up pictures and know the exact measurement of it. I am very curious to know if it is fitted with sound posts (like a fiddle). It has such a wonderful "true" dulcimer tone. So many of the more mordern dulcimers sounds like a small guitar. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

Thank you, having read a lot about 'Uncle Ed' it is good to be able to see one of his instruments being played

Now that's a dulcimer with the real old-time dulcimer sound. Practically none that have been made for the last fifty years have that distinctive watery twang. This is a great song, and I'd like to hear you play one in the old style, on the melody string only, with a noter. I'd also like to see some close-ups of the instrument.
