Jamming to a house track by Atjazz called Illumination ... recorded using Audix Fusion mics into Sonar 8 and overdubbed onto the video. My first real test of my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R interface, and I have to say I am happy with it so far.

I'm using a Pearl Rhythm Traveler kit (yeah the el cheapo $499 practice set) which has become my main gigging and recording kit after almost a year of trying different heads, muffling techniques and tunings. Its easier to work with than a standard kit because of the single heads - I mic the toms from underneath for isolation, and don't have to worry about tuning two different heads. Not to mention it's much easier to lug to a gig ...

  • Nice. Ive thought about micing that way. It seems like it might make it more punchy/defined/concentrated, from my imagination, and stronger. The results ive had from micing the top before, seemed sort of....weak, asif youre hitting hard but it doesnt really pick that up, in a way Although that might have just been my lack of recording knowledge. Anyway what mikes do you have on the toms? Would you use the same kind of mics you might use micing the top head, for the undearneath?

  • I used Audix Fusion mics on the toms - I forget the model number, but they are designed specifically for toms. They are the same mics as I would use if micing from the top; the difference being that because of the isolation you get by micing from underneath, you don't have to have the levels quite as high, meaning that you will get less bleeding from the other drums, which ultimately means more dynamic headroom.

  • I like!! - Atjazz

  • @martinatjazz Thanks!

  • did you replace the hardware for this kit in the video? or is that hi hat stand that comes with the kit actually ok?

  • No, Im using alternate hardware for the vid. That hi-hat stand is actually a Pulse Percussion stand that I paid $40 for from Musicians friend. I don't know if they still carry them any more, but it's probably comparable to the $120 Pearl 900 series stand. Ditto for the boom stands and the snare stand, also $40 a piece.
