It was nearly 6.30pm, and quite dark already, when the Royal Scot, hauled by Duchess of Sutherland steamed down the West Coast main line just south of Preston station. An impressive sight as the engine passes Flag Lane bridge - and you'll see that the fireman had stoked up quite a fire!

  • I belive that it's a backup in case the steam engine fails - which does happen from time to time - although some engines seem to be more susceptible than others! 46115 Scots Guardsman failed on three occasions I think early in 2010, but 5690 Leander has laboured faithfully and frequently in recent years with no apparent problems.

  • Holy flaming smoke... Bet the driver had to wear fire resistant clothing for that.

  • may i ask why there is always a deisel loco behind the steam loco at the back

  • Fantastic.

This class is the most powerfully steam locomotive to be made for the British rail mainline. Estimated to have over 3300 horsepower. More powerfully than the diesels that replaced it.

    Power isn't speed though.

  • Cheers mate i got her this morning

  • Wow, that was nice, many thanks. Alan

  • Brilliant - thanks for sharing - Frank.

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!
