The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial is located on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 and the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 souls, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. We visited the site in June, 2010.

  • My father joined to U.S. Army with his best friend on what was called the "buddy system". This was in early 1941. Well they joined up and after basic training were assigned to different companies. When the war broke out, my dad went to the south pacific and his buddy went to Europe. My dad fought on Guadalcanal and his friend was killed on D-Day storming the beach. Lucky for my family that’s the way it went.

    His friend is buried here.

    RIP to all.
