  • "As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church."

    (1 Corinthians 14:33-36)

This verse is disgraceful and sexist. I can't believe a divine being would be as sexist and ignorant as mortal men are.

  • Do you maybe think that this passage was written for the church at the time in that particular area?

  • Redonka 4:65-79

Ye it was a coupon that had long since expired and it was Jesus who said: "come onto me as I come onto you."

  • Context: 1Cor chapters 12-14 show a number of ways in which people prefer to hear the sound of their own tongues than to hear the word of God (prophecy). The disruption caused by the women was just one practical application of Paul's overall teaching in these chapters - that we should shut up and listen to the God who wants to speak!

  • It was shameful for women (or anyone) to interrupt the service, which is why Paul wrote this. Blessings to you, Spinach as you ask tough questions.

  • Yet if you were alive back then you would be disgusted by the rights that they were given. It was revolutionary for the time. If you are going to debate with Christians try not to take things out of context.

  • The passage WAS written at the time for that audience. I agree, it does seem sexist, but you have to remember that, at the time, woman were uneducated. They could easily pose questions that could unneccesarily interupt the service. Therefore, so as to prevent this happening and the woman involved being shamed or embarrassed for asking a question the men would have known, it made more sense just to ask at home. I do agree it sounds sexist, but it is not something currently practised today.
