A tribute dedicated to the man and his memorial in Washington, DC. Video was taken just over one week before the scheduled opening. The memorial is scheduled to be dedicated on Washington, D.C.'s National Mall on August 28, 2011, the 48th anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream" speech. It is located adjacent to the FDR Memorial, between the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial, and will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's national and international contributions to the American dream—a dream he spoke of in terms of possibility and hope—and its pillars of freedom, democracy, and opportunity for all.

Although this will not be the first memorial to an African-American in Washington, D.C., King will be the first African-American honored with a memorial on or near the National Mall area and only the fourth non-President to be memorialized in such a way. The King Memorial will be administered by the National Park Service (NPS). Video by E.A. Stansbury.

  • THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SHARE THIS!!!

Tears come too easy when I hear this great man speak. Where are men like this today? Where are the Kings, the Gandhi's?...the men that transend mortality to lead new generations...where are these men today? They are YOU! Carve out just one small percent of yourself and share it with the world every day. Speak out when you see injustice, speak up when you see suffering, speak LOUD when you see your brother or sister beaten to the ground, lend a hand.

  • I'm an African American male and a huge believer of Dr. MLK's philosophies, but I think he is probably looking down at this very moment unimpressed. At $120m you could have given 500 black kids full 4 year scholarships or even built 10 community centers in the countries highest crime areas. With all the schools, libraries, streets, postages and even a holiday, King will never be forgotten. Too many black kids are gunned down to spend money on such nonsense. This wont get us to the mountain tops.

  • Dumb, Dumb, It's not the "If I had sneezed" speech. It's called "The Mountaintop" speech. Delivered April 3, 1068 in Memphis, TN at the Masonic Temple.

Also, just an aesthetics point, Dr. King's lips and nose are to big and prominent. His head is elongated because the hairline was not done properly and from a side view Dr. King has a receding hairline and his fore head protrudes too far. I give the sculpture a "C+." The sculptor did not mess up Mao like this.

  • Mahalo/thank you for keeping his voice of courage & integrity alive for future generations to honor this important monument to this one man who inspired millions to move humanity forward to justice instead of hate, in the name of God. E Ho'omaluhia me ka Honua. May Peace Prevail on Earth with warm aloha.

May we reawaken courage, love, integrity, compassionate humanity in ourselves once more.
