Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Parliamentarian Ara Nranyan discusses the effects of neoliberal economic policies subscribed to by government officials in Yerevan.
Namely, he addresses the neoliberal argument that Armenia must keep its wages low in order to attract foreign investment, pointing out that this has not taken place but, rather, caused more workers and professionals to seek better working conditions abroad. Keeping wages low benefits only the ruling, capitalist class which reaps even greater profits from poor labor conditions.
In contrast, the ARF is pushing for an economic policy which seeks to promote competitive industries, quality production and living wages. Only by protecting and defending the livelihoods of working people will Armenia's productive sectors flourish and compete on a worldwide level.
The interview was conducted in 2009 at the AYF-Western Region Central Office.
