Nellcote, Villefranche sur Mer, July 2007

The villa Nellcote is located in Villefranche sur Mer, a beautiful village between Nice and Cap Ferrat. I visited this famous place during our family vacation at the Cote d'Azur in July 2007. The Stones recorded main parts of Exile On Main St. in the basement of the house, one of the best if not the best rock album of all time. The mansion was rented by Keith in 1971 after the group had to move to the south of France due to problems with the tax law in England. If you want to know more about the recording of Exile and the crazy summer of 1971 at Nellcote, this book is highly recommended: "Exile on Main St. A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones" by Robert Greenfield.

@django030358: Although, it should be noted, they didn't actually record Sweet Virginia at Nellcote, though it appears on Exile On Main Street. It was actually recorded the previous year (1970) before they departed from England. It was recorded at Mick's country house, Stargroves, again using the mobile truck as they did in the summer of '71 at Nellcote.

@aarfeld, I know that as I collect Stones bootlegs since the mid seventies, but the song fits perfectly to the atmosphere of this place (and the clip) IMO.

Hi, Thanks for your feedback. It was big fun visiting this place. I wanted to go there since I read about the Exile sessions for the first time 30 years ago. I am sure that someone is living there but I have no idea who it is.

@goldenoriol some Russian guys had it for a while now its an Italian banker that lives there.The place was totally renovated,one guy has pictures,that place is a real mansion now!

I wonder if Keith or any of the others have ever been back in the intervening years for a nostolgic look around the old place. Who lives there now?
