So, I wonder if someone can cure my ignorance: Why didn't this guy have a career/adulation like Rubenstein or Horowitz when, approximately, he's twice as good as both of them put together?

@uhartchristian Totally agree. And Josef Levin, "Lhevinne", too. I felt in love with this two pianists.

@uhartchristian : I enjoy his playing greatly!

Respond to this video... I think Grigory Ginzburg can be seen as one of the very most important pianists of russia. His musical taste is absolute georgeous. His technique "irreprochable" . Everybody admires Svatoslav Richter but they should admire Grigoy Ginzburg. He has better taste and a better vision of life. well thats what I hear out of his music.... opinions are very personal....

@GetMeThere1 ver y simple to answer, he was behind the iron curtain !!!!. he made career in russia and was famous there but not in the west as he could not go out of russia that easy and did not have a western impresario who managed his career....

Some really great touches here. Stephen Hough's recording still the best overall imho.

I think Ginzburg was never as popular as the other major pianists because he either didn't have the "mystique" they did, or it was because he stayed in Russia for his entire career.
It certainly wasn't because he couldn't play. He's my favourite interpreter of Liszt.

@kempff95 : My opinion does not come with substantial defense. There's no question that Horowitz has made some performances of historic quality. I suppose, in part, my regard for Ginzburg relates to my wish to be supportive of wonderful pianism that is under-appreciated generally. I'm sure that Ginzburg, by virtue of his name alone, had to overcome much more than was fair. I didn't know the Sofronitski story--but I won't attempt to judge an artist's life. Sofronitski has my highest regard.

why do you think that he play better than horowitz ??
i agree that he play this piece perfect ; perfect mood and characteristic structure ...
but , in my opinion horowitz ,we just shouldn't compare to no one ....
horowitz was the one!!!!
p.s- did you know that when ginzburg was he director of moscow conservatory he threw out sofrenitzski from the schooll ....

I didn't mean to put you in "no win" situation whatsoever... ;)
I like Ginzburg's Tarantella and I also think Judd's Tarantella should be great. Every great performer would make us to "reconsider" something without actually making other ones better/worse.
I'm sure many contemporary artists will continue great traditions of old masters. It's just that our time has different values and finding *the truth* is getting harder...

u put me in a no win situation, u liked TJ & u also said why you should reconsider. Your being just a bit unfair. How many pieces of music have you heard with one performer and another performer comes along & produces for u a more profitable performance. Artists now adays esp. pianists are so uncapable of delivering a performance without adding passages of flare - just because they can! And it spoils from hearing the thing as it was supposed to be played.
Have a listen to Terrence Judd. He will make you reconsider...
