ミールワームによる骨のクリーニング実験 Mealworms, The Bone Cleaner

鳥や動物の骨格標本を作るテクニックの一つにミールワーム（チャイロコメノゴミムシダマシ幼虫）を使う方法があるそうです。骨に付着した肉片を隅々まできれいに食べて掃除­してくれるらしい。鳥の水炊きを食べた後の骨を材料に実験開始。予想に反して、与えた途端にミールワームが殺到するようなことはなかった。
一晩置いたら骨の両端に群がって軟骨を齧っていた。途中経過を調べるために取り出した骨を水洗いしてから写真に撮る。腐敗臭ではないが骨髄から漂う血の匂いが少し生臭い。­専門サイトで読んだ通り、骨を水で濡らした方が食い付きが良い。初めから濡らして与えれば時間短縮できたと思う。まさに骨の髄までしゃぶり尽くします。

Grubs of the mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor, family Tenebrionidae) are voratious scavengers and they eat whatever of our leftovers or garbage. I've heard that carcass bones can be cleansed by mealworms, as shown in my favorite forensic drama series of CSI. So, let's do it!
