Dear Bosirant - this film was controversial in Russia for NOT being propagandist enough! it is not hideous, Bolshevik or propaganda anymore than what the US was making at the time could be called hideous, Capitalist propaganda at the height of the Depression where poor Americans starved. And in any case Dovzhenko was Ukrainian himself!

It is also, in spite of its beauty, a hideous 1930 Russian Bolshevik propaganda film shot while Moscow's henchmen were planning a genocide in Ukraine that murdered millions of Ukrainians.
