Cello-only version of Elias Kahila´s cover of Jam (by MJ). Does not include the original song, only the cello, which is all a composition of Elias Kahila (except for a small part on 2.45-2.57 when cello plays the horn synth part).

"This cello-only version of Jam cover was requested a lot, so i´m happy to put it out for you. Here you are able to listen more carefully what "funk-cello" is about and hear bits of the bow technique behind it. Good examples of the "funk blues-shuffle bow technique" can be heard right at the start, 0.06 - 0.16 , then for longer at 1.44 - 2.08 , at 3.19-3.20 and also at some other short spots throughout the song."

"When i play, i try basicly try to think about the original composition, and not ruin the original idea of the song with too much playing. I dont want to solo too much, but one of my main goals is that i want to show what cello is capable of rhytm-wise. Also versatility is something i try to keep in mind."

"The main idea was - lets funk. I wanted to show it in the beginning. The part from 0.06-0.16 shows the main funk blues shuffle groove technique which i worked six months on, for just this song. It is the most difficult thing i have played with cello during the 20 years of playing. Then from 0.21 , expecially from 0.32 i got a cool kind of Prodigy vibe for the verse groove, so i kept it. I play low because i didnt want to play too much and in front of Michael´s voice.

The chorus groove i wanted to funk, but with some kind of rhytmical brotherhood with Michael´s voice. I dont think it was my best work. Then after it, 1.27- i wanted to rock a bit before the another groove part starts at 1.44. Then it´s the chorus groove again , and some traditional long beautiful notes from the cello from 2.33. From 2.44 i wanted to play the horn synth riff because it sounded cool and brought another new thing for the table. The metal riff from 3.16 was maybe my favourite part to play. And not the most difficult one."

"Recording Jam was a lot of hard work and also fun. Even though i had the main riffs and jams ready shortly in a few days during January 2010, i had to work on my technical stuff (just how the hell do i play these parts with a cello? haha) and arrangement to try my best, with respect to Michael. Making "Jam" took about six months. I spent most of my early summer 2010 mixing indoors while it was sunny beach time in Finland. That wheather doesnt happen often here...haha."

"My ideas became out of jamming: No notes. My influences? Lots of different kind of music. Michael Jackson of course, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Don Henley, Jeff Porcaro, Toto, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eagles, Mötley Crue, Rolling Stones, all that grooves. I recorded cello in a conservatory room live with Roland Edirol R-09 mp3/waw recorder. You may here some "wah-wah" type sound mixing, which were done later. The video - not high in my list of priorities, but a necessity - was done with two cell phones (Nokia E75 & Nokia N80, placed still on notes stands), which i controlled. I had to walk across the small room to put four machines on (1st cam, 2nd cam, Roland waw recorder and mp3 player for my ears), just to record."
