(UPDATE: works with WLMM versions PRIOR TO Windows Live 2011)

Using Windows Media profiles, you can create custom output formats for Windows Movie Maker and Windows Live Movie Maker. In this example I'll be showing you how to create a lossless profile - lossless video + lossless audio.

- Step 1 (0:00): Download Windows Media Encoder 9 at http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Windows_Media_Encoder and install it.
- Step 2 (0:31): Create your custom profile with Windows Media Profile Editor (Start Menu / Programs / Windows Media / Utilities / Windows Media Profile Editor)
- Step 3 (1:48): Save it to:
* C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Profiles, if you have Windows Movie Maker (create this folder if it doesn't exist)
* C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\Video Profiles, if you have Windows LIVE Movie Maker

Purpose:
- get a lossless quality (useful if you want to re-encode your video, considering Windows Movie Maker produces WMV files only)
- use a custom framerate
- use a custom resolution
- etc

Here's a .prx file with a 100% quality (resolution: 1280x720) :

Another one with 60FPS, 1024x768, 100% quality :

  • Can you create a lossless prx file for me and host it at rapidshare or file upload?

Because the program doesn't work with me.

  • I've added a link in the description. Tell me if you need a different resolution / framerate / ...

  • i get the lossless audio part but what about the video? I don't see it done here unless someone can explain to me. i really don't want to lose any more quality when publishing a movie

  • In the first tab, choose "Quality VBR" for the video. In the second tab, set the video quality to 100.

Now, is it mathematically lossless? I don't know, but there isn't any visible quality loss.

  • ITS NOT WORKING FOR ME!!!! I save it and everything, but Windows Live Movie Maker just can't even find the file I save! HELP!!!

  • @Twisted4000

Also, I've just noticed that in the last Windows Live Beta, you can't use Windows Media Profiles...

Does your version of Movie Maker says "Beta"?

Anyway, with this new version, you can choose custom output settings directly from Movie Maker. There's no "lossless" or "variable bitrate" option, but you can choose a high bitrate.

  • Thanks, dude. Quick and to the point, you just saved me an evening.

  • Another option is to create a copy of an already existing profile and editing it !

  • I tried a lot of times initially but it did not work.I was about to give up but gave it a try for the last time and it seems to work.Maybe windows movie maker remembers the profiles and somehow fails to load a new one.The best option would be to logoff/logon or reboot after a new profile has been created, hope this helps !

  • Windows Live Movie Maker suck!! Don't even download it! Only download Windows Movie Maker 2.6 or 6.0 for vista to use it on Windows 7.

  • How do I use this to make it mono audio?

  • @DutchGameowner Yeah me too! WTF????

  • How can I do this on Vista? (I have windows 7 but I use the movie maker from vista)

  • Wait but I have Windows 7 and it does not work

  • aw dude thanx for this

  • @Stormtrooper042 Hey thanks.

Can you create one with Resoloution: 1024x768

    Framerate: 60FPS
