My two weimaraners hunting roe deer, 2009, Yaya scent-tracking with sound, the deer they seize is a wounded animal, one of their job's is blood-tracking wounded animals (also the ones hit by cars) and in the end stopping or seizing the animal, making it as quick as possible for man to end the suffering of the animals. The dogs are used either before the shot, to track and drive out animals, or after the shot, to help find the wounded and make it as quick as possible.

  • Because it's a versatile breed, in versatile "work" lines they have many predispositions, compared to breeds that are bred for lesser numbers of tasks. So they are sort of more wide open to everything, you have all these different games "in" the dog somewhere so to speak, many-many "doors". Sometimes at first they are not really entering any of them - but they are ready to take the game you want, when you guide them to.

  • With good genes it's very natural, but even then, in my experience, you have to work on different games, for the dog to understand what you want (and how much you have to work on it depends on how well you get the idea to dog - search, track gets you a reward/shot game). Before that its not deliberate hunting, searching for specific game(s), following them longer etc. But with for example tracking with a bark or chasing with a bark, this is entirely genetic, you cannot help the dogs to do that.

  • Our blue Weim has chased after elk and deer. He will sent track deer from a long distance. For our hunting purposes, we don't want him chasing elk or deer, but tracking deer is a fun thing to do with him. We can call him off, or "whoa" him if he sees deer and elk now, but have no doubt that he would hunt them if we let him.

  • How do you get the dogs to trail a specific animal? I want to train one for after the shot to help with recovery. Any advice?

  • This is not hunting. This is a shame! For hunting roe deer a dog doesn't need a good nose ore genetics. And never is it allowed to follow and kill a healthy roe deer. You have no idea what this dogs are breeded for.

  • @uroncoke where do you live? I live in Arizona, I don't need a permit to own a gun. All I need to hunt is a hunting license which is sold at any walmart or any license dealer

  • i need some help on the subject of hunting, i have a dog and i want to introduce it to the sport of hunting and i want to get into shooting, i looked up licenses but all that permits is target shooting...what should i do to get a license that permits me and my kid to hunt game birds with our dog?

  • Wow! I have a wiemie. It's a mazing he has the potential to do that.
