Garbage, garbage, garbage.
Long tail is something you use in an early phase. In my case, I do all my on-page and off-page pretty much solo with the assistance of a web designer and the client to provide content. With that said it is critical for my boss to see that I am making weekly progress on SEO and because of that long tail provides almost immediate traffic.
I will also put most anything I own on the fact that a completely relevant on-page long tail outperforms most any auto longtail

Interesting. SeoMoz-org has a video about the benefits of targeting long tail terms. But this video makes sense... however, my target phrase is so competitive... right now I'm on page 26. Bah.
