A great horned owl swoops in the dark. This owl was used to me - it often perched in the trees by my house and hooo-ed into the night. I approached it that evening with an infrared camcorder and stood right under it. This didn't bother it particularly and it continued to look around the crop field it was perched above. Eventually it decided to swoop to a tree in the center of the field. It likely has a nest nearby as do a pair of barred owls.
**The Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is a large native of the Americas. It can be up to 27 inches long, have a wingspan of over 60 inches, and weigh over 3 pounds. Owls have amazing binocular vision under low light conditions. Their hearing is acute and they have good depth perception. They can pin point the horizontal and vertical direction of a sound. They hunt by night and sometimes emit a horrible-sounding noise when they make a kill.
This was our first video upload. It was taken by infrared. Added a longer version, OWL-NIGHT CREATURES, SWOOP ATTACK WATCH DEER, after we got better at doing videos.
