3D Art Gallery Design -- This course will have students design and build a functional and aesthetically conceived 3D art gallery where many forms of their own artwork may be displayed and toured. Students will assume the role of a virtual gallery curator as they acquire, develop and interpret a collection of works in order to inform, educate or entertain their audience. Through designing this spatial environment to exhibit their best works, the student will develop an intimate understanding of color, texture, lighting, shadow, reflection and even motion. What is most exciting about virtual design is that there are no physical limits to hinder an artist's creativity. In this gallery there are no limits on space, the laws of gravity and physics are suspended, and the costs of materials non-existent. The only real limitation is the curator's imagination. Skills learned and practiced will be; creating with primitives and splines, modifying with parametric and free-form deformers, applying and customizing standard and bit-mapped materials, inserting direct, indirect and ambient light sources and adjusting shadow parameters, using raytrace materials for reflection and refraction, and setting frame numbers and frame rates to run animated works and tours. All students will have the opportunity to publish professional looking stills and animated walkthroughs, which can be exported and published on any website. What's most important to take away from this course is an expanded vision of the possibilities that digital art proffers physical art and the space it occupies.
