this is awesome. one question, what about in game stairs. they are a pretty common element in most of today's games.

Stairs are difficult, as is rolling. The best approximation will be to tip the surface and use a body harness to impose a work function equivalent to the work of climbing the stairs.

User position is sensed using cameras. Position information tells the control computer when and in what direction to move the belt. This system uses an external operator. When you want off you yell "OFF!" Alternatively, you could have a RF off button strapped to your arm. Or you could run at 7 mph, faster than the system, and step off. Or you could jump 4 feet sideways and land on the edge. Easy.

I could imagine some sort of local raising of the surface to at least give what essentially would be a bump map texture to the ground. - all you'd need is miniscule pistons and a way to move the deformed belt over them, or a version where there are freely rotatable spheres on top of the pistons. That should actually be somewhat doable. Now, trying to extend that to full 3D distortion would be much harder.

This is still an input device -- you would still be able to move, just like you're still able to hold the joystick forward even though you're at a wall

Disengage safety emitters and raise computer power on Deck 9, and transfer to holodeck 4. Galaxy class design only.

It would respond similar to how a game responds when you continue to hold up on the controller, despite being held back by a barrier. You simply wouldn't move any further in the game.
