I, Robert Smith, show you every step I take to building a custom made solar panel from scratch. I explain in detail about each item I use and why to use it, so the video is fairly long.

I will be hosting the majority of the video on my own server so you can view it all in one take. It will take time to edit the video, but the more of you that subscribe to the video, the faster I'll try to get it out to you guys as it just shows that people are interested and appreciate what I'm doing, as I'm providing this video for free unlike some videos you see on YouTube.

The method I described in this video is just one way to go about it, however, there are many ways you can build a custom solar panel. Some use aluminum or plastic frames, but I found for a beginner, working with wood would probably be easier and cheaper.

Overall, building a solar panel can be fun, but there are many factors that play into building a solar panel, and I as well still have an extreme amount to still learn about it.

So I hope that for those wanting to learn more about solar energy and wanting to take the adventure of building their own solar panel will find this video very useful.

To watch to full video just video, just visit: http://www.solartechtown.com

Again the video is fairly large, so to prevent from having to put 6 or 7 parts on youtube in 10 minute sections, I'm just going to host in on my server.

If you all have ANY questions, feel free to leave a comment under the video.

Thanks guys!

  • Hello Rob,

great job in these videos. My daughter and I had a great moment in watching all the videos and takes notes. I was wondering where to buy some cells for a project? and can you elaborate a little more about the positive side and the negative side of each cell and how to connect all of them together. We get a little confused about the (+) and (-) side of 1 cell. My daughter said she think you'll be something big one day and keep on the good work.

  • Hi lesanglais,

Visit my forum over at SolarTechTown and I'll try to assist you there.

  • I think you mean because you DON'T want the cells to be stretched and squeezed as the wood expands and contracts, because that is what would happen if you put silicon around the edges instead of just in the center of the back.

  • Next time if you drill first before painting then you avoid chipping the paint and having to cover it with sillicone

  • at 6:00 minutes there is a trick to using silicone.....try to wet your fingers a bit, myself I lick my fingers then I smear the silicone around the hole to get it nice and smooth (it doesnt stick to your fingers). Some may use a bit of water. That is a cable guy trick from my brother. Thanks for the video and using a grommet technique to make a professional look. Cheers Robert!

  • Sun spots and solar energy systems--does all this solar activity create any kind of risk of overloading a solar energy system?

  • Why are you using a wood backer when some others are glass backers? I haven't watched all your videos yet but I will soon. Thanks, Jimmy

  • great videos, love em. It is pronounced "seal"-"a"-"cone".

  • The plastic pieces you are refering too are call gromets you can find them at any supply store very cheap and they come in a variety of sizes.

  • I hope that at the end of the videos you explain how to put them in a house or something

  • @lesanglais ebay sells pressy cheap u can get 96 A grade cells for 111$ with free shipping
