Antigone Plot
Both Oedipuss sons, Eteocles and Polyneices, kill each other in battle after fighting over who would be the ruler of Thebes.
Creon, now newly elected ruler and uncle to the brothers, decrees that Polyneices was a traitor and that his body is to never be given a proper burial. Anyone one who does is to be sentence to death.
The brothers sister, Antigone, refuses to accept this and plans to bury Polyneices anyway because it is the law of the gods for everyone to be given a proper burial.
Antigone asks her sister Ismene if she would assist her in doing this deed but Ismene refuses to go againt Creon.
Later on, Creon finds out from a soldier who was to guard the body that someone has given the body burial rights. Enrage by this news he tells the guard that whoever did this needs to be found or the guards will be put to death in the convicts place.
The soilder finds the culprit, Antigone, and takes her to Creon where she back talks him saying she only follows the gods rules. Creon has her locked in a cave with a little food where she will stay until she dies of starvation.
Creons son, Haemon, asks his father to let Antigone, his was going to be his future wife, go because all the people are saying to because they feel what she did was the right thing to do and so does he. Creon says no.
Later the blind prophet, Teiresias, says to Creon that the gods seem to be unhappy that he has imprisoned Antigone and advises that he let her go straight away. Creon refuses to give in and calls the prophet a fool. Teiresias issues a final warning to Creon that if he does not release Antigone soon, Creon will endure the punishment of the gods and experience more misery than that of Antigones.
Having no where else to turn to, he asks his most trusted advisor Leader of the Chorus what he should do. The Leader tells him that it is probably for the best that he let Antigone go to make the people happy. So Creon agrees to let her go.
On the way to set Antigone free they hear a scream coming from inside the cave. They rush inside to find that Haemon is holding Antigones corpes. Rather than starve to death in the cave, Antigone hung herself knowing she was never going to be free. Haemon was just on his way to set her free when he found her the way she was. He wailed with sorrow at the lost of his beloved bride.
Creon walked in and Haemon charged at him with his sword. Haemon missed his father and filled with grief, killed himself.
Back at Thebes, a messenger tells Creons wife, Eurydice, that her son is dead. Filled with hate for her husband she cruses him and then kills herself as well.
Carry his sons body back home a messenger tells him of his wifes death. He is filled with grief and misery, wishing himself dead. Leaving the Leader of the Chorus to say how pride can lead to tragic events that teaches foolish to be wise.
