William Appiah was just 18 when he was gunned down at a Jane Finch basketball court, and the murder has puzzled Toronto Police.

"There has to be a reason obviously but it's not one we know," Det Sgt Gary Grinton allowed at a press conference Friday.

"He was known in a very minor way to the Toronto Police Service. Certainly nothing that would lead us to this. Obviously there's something that happened," he continued.

And it's hoped those answers will be on a security tape released Friday.

Officers reviewed the video and found enough to release better descriptions of the suspects, and they're hoping the images will jog someone's memory.

"What I'm hoping is that people will remember a group of three people dressed like this, maybe they'll recognize the gate, the attire. Anything along that line and be able to give us some suggestions as to who this might be," Grinton outlined.

The teen had recently moved from Toronto to Brampton, but still attended high school in the city and had friends in the area.

He was with several of them, as well as dozens of younger children, when he was shot Tuesday. Police allege he was approached by three men, and one of them opened fire at the crowded playground.

The bullets hit Appiah in the head and torso, killing him on the scene.

Now, we may have a better idea of what happened, why, and - most importantly for police - who did it.

At the time of the murder, cops released only unspecific descriptions of the suspects. They were looking for three young black males, all in their late teens. At least two of them were wearing hooded sweatshirts.

"Beyond that, our descriptions are very vague, and that is from co-operative witnesses," Grinton lamented Wednesday.

He also noted they fled in a small, silver, Japanese vehicle.

Grinton urged the suspects to turn themselves in. One of them is pictured above.
