For all the fanfare that Star Trek IV had received, and the momentum it created for the creation of Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek V would bring everything crashing and burning down. It was regarded as the worst film in the franchise, and is largely ignored by many fans. However it would see Jerry Goldsmith return, and he was basically the only saving grace of the film. He uses the fanfare created by Alexander Courage in a way that has never been replicated. It's bold, and in your face, and it's such a shame that Goldsmith wouldn't use this version of it again in the future films.

The score would see the return of many themes such as the main theme, but also the Klingon theme which would be altered, and sound a bit more bombastic. Goldsmith would also use a synthetic scream of a bird for the Klingon theme which added even more of a bestial quality, but still maintaining a certain level of elegance.

It's somewhat of a forgotten score even in the Trek universe since it's part of arguably the worst Star Trek movie.

  • Jerry Goldsmith's movie scores are just as good or better than John Williams. If anyone disagrees with that, I have one word for you: 'PATTON'. Case closed.

  • You have to say this for the Star trek films: from the very best (Khan, The Voyage Home, The Undiscovered Country, First Contact) to the worst (This film, Killing Kirk and humiliating everyone else in Generations, and Insurrection) to all in between (The Motion Picture, also known as 2001: A Trek Odyssey...oy, to The Search for Spock and Death of the Greatest Ship EVER to Nemesis, also known as Khan II: Killing Data BADLY...and then I like XI but opinions vary) one constant:

    TREK MUSIC=BRAVO!

  • People are going to send me a TON of hate mail for this, but I just gotta say it: Star Trek is great, but I like Star Wars way better.

Folks, I'm sorry. I just had to say it. Please don't hate me for voicing my opinion.

  • @Revoltingmachine even compared to star wars episode I and II this is excellent

  • I agree this is nowhere near the best star trek movie, but nothing about it was "bad." I thought it was fun, cheesy like the original series in a GOOD way, interesting, and entertaining. Compared to Insurrection, this is a great movie!

  • @TheCatapultTV its actually from "st: the motion picture"

  • @lighthouse44 I think Goldsmith is better than williams

  • @SPeacock This was a very character driven Star Trek movie and it tackled a lot of the themes that were central to the original series! the original crew all gave top notch performances in this film

  • @katakisLives I agree :) This is one of my favourite ST movies, and it's unfair to see it get judged unfairly because of its few (if significant) flaws. I don't know which film got butchered the worst - ST 5 or Alien 3.

  • Star Trek V: We're on a Mission From God.

  • @obiwanobiwan13 Thanks for putting around 15 spoilers into less than 200 words. Is there anyone else who dies that I'm not yet aware of? Spock is Kirk's father, perhaps?

  • @katakisLives I dont hate TNG films. I enjoy watching them the same as any other Star Trek.
