"Citizenship is a new, unconstitutional phenomena invented in the 1900"
--Article I, section 8, clause 4 of the US Constitution expressly gives Congress the power to establish a uniform rule of naturalization.
1790 First Congress, Act of March 26th, 1790, 1 Stat. 103. Describes how children born beyond our borders shall be considered natural born US citizens provided their parents are currently US citizens and have been for a certain number of years.
--I never said civil wars & civil rights movements didn't happen in the real world, dim-wit. Your ideas of citizenship don't.
"an underclass"
--The USA is a class-less society. Anyone who is poor has the opportunity (using their brains) to make their situations better. That's the whole idea of our free market system & "the American Dream."
"Puerto Rico"
--Every time we offer them independence or statehood they turn them down. So blow it out your ass, you lame propagandist.
As I said, Google Civil war and the civil right movement. It does happen in the real world, and history has proven that an underclass is morally incorrect and ultimately unsustainable.
Plus, the idea of Citizenship is a new, unconstitutional phenomena invented in the 1900 so people in places like Puerto Rico could be under USA jurisdiction but without the benefits of representative democracy.
At the end, a comprehensive, welcoming immigration policy benefits both USA and the rest of the world
"The basic premise of a democratic government is that the people affected by its rule should be able to decide who and how the government works"
--That may work in FantasyLand, but not in the real world. CITIZENS vote in elections, not illegal immigrants. That's part of the reasons for coming here legally. Of course, I'm sure if 'the Obama' wins illegal immigrants will be granted voting rights. But until then, reason and justice prevail.
The constitution was made for the POPULATION of USA (read it, is in plain English). Immigrants pay taxes, are affected by policies and laws, and constitute part of the community.
The basic premise of a democratic government is that the people affected by its rule should be able to decide who and how the government works. To do laws that benefit one part of the population but the other is morally unsustainable. Google civil war and civil rights movement for more info
--The people the laws of the USA are supposed to serve are the citizens of the USA. Our govt isn't there to serve the interests of people of other nations.
"The law as it stands right now CLEARLY does not work"
--It did for many decades until Bush decided to stop enforcing them.
"not for the immigrants"
--They're not immigrants, no more than a burglar or squatter is a "guest" in your home.
sorry for jumping in but... laws are made to serve people, people are not supposed to SERVE the law. The law as it stands right now CLEARLY does not work, and that is why is not followed. It does not work for the Americans (low birth rate, broken SSecurity, need for labor and so on...)and obviously not for the immigrants. What is fundamentally wrong with your view is that you guys see law like the ultimate morality. The law as it stands is immoral, because it endangers people. Morality makes law
