In Nelson, we have a massive population of jackdaws (http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/j/jackdaw/index.asp) which flock in large numbers just before the sun sets....they wheel around the sky for 10 minutes or so before finally settling in for the night. This video gives a short clip of just a small section of the total flock, on a cold, clear February night.

  • Where was this? Amazing video. Reminds me of my holidays in cornwall...

  • It's Nelson in South Wales, not far from Pontypridd.

they are always worth watching when it goes dark...

  • I literally just seen this outside my house about 1 minute ago. What does it actually mean?

  • they are very sociable birds and seem to get together to have a gossip before they settle down for the night. It always amazes me that it falls silent as soon as they all land, and the birds all seem to disappear as if by magic .

  • they are great! don't be so negative!...they were there before Nelson was built, i bet....

  • amazing....

  • It sure is great, i go to work by bike , and pass their resting spot on an industrial estate every morning, i often stop to enjoy the happening!

yeah i think they do have convos.. they are sooo smart!, did you know they can get really old, they often reach the age of 65!

  • it is great isn't it? they swarm every day as the sun sets, and seem to me to be having a big social chat before settling down to sleep! They swirl and sweep over the houses and trees in amazing patterns and look as though they are having so much fun.

  • I saw the same thing every morning at sunrise last winter, jackdaws are already swarm birds but in winter the swarms double in numbers, migratory birds from scandinavia join the local birds

    Its an awesome sight!

  • They are brilliant birds. The best thing to be woken up by in the early hours of the morning.

I live on the south coast of England near Brighton, and they don't come down this far...

Something i always look forward to when going to Cornwall...

  • Yeah, I thought it was magnificent when I first seen it, never saw anything like it before.
