I wondered about this too until I read an article by Bertus Rozemeijer on fishing for muskies. Here's a quote from his article.
"Why bother about a net? We are hand-landing all our pike, and the bigger they are, the easier it is to find a place for the full hand behind the gill plate and lift the fish out. Not so with muskies! They just keep their gillplate closed, denying excess of your hands."
knots in the net? pretty sure these companies solved the problems associated with rolling fish in the net... modern esox nets are largely responsible for hundreds of muskies swimming completely unmarked and unharmed, with a 0% mortality rate. If you want to hand land your fish more power to you, but it's probably not a great idea telling everyone else to including beginners and avid anglers. By the way, I'm still waiting to see YOUR video hand- landing a 50+" fish....
I don't know why EVERY experienced musky guide / tournament teams / musky fishing show hosts would use the exact same method of landing muskies if it wasn't the safest for the fish and the angler... We must all be completely clueless and careless about the future of the fish we land hey punklives01? Hand land them all you want, we know what we are doing... if we were harming/ killing fish with our nets, why would EVERYBODY and their brother be doing it and PREACHING the proper technique??
We American musky hunters buy the right gear for proper C+R, Including large Beckman fin-saver nets which are designed with net material that is virtually impossible to sink hooks into. Not only does your hooks not sink into the material of the net, but also the mesh is engineered with small openings so the fins and tail of large predators do not fit and get cut up by the mesh. Notice how the fish lies in the basket of the net rather than tangle and wrap itself up like deep butterfly style nets?
y do no american fishermen take em with their hands, in europe all pike fisherman use hands, alot easier and less hurting the fish and npo bgettig hooks out of net
