Dennis Pagen, chairman of the CIVL hang gliding subcommittee on the issues being discussed around hang gliding competition at this Plenary. Subjects include sprog settings, points for altitude in a stopped task, weight restrictions, open-distance comps, and prototype hang gliders at Cat 1 events.

  • ...after every outing to the training hill, I reread Pagen's book about hang gliding for

    beginner pilots. And I learn or relearn something new, relevant, important.

  • Sprogs are wire braced struts enclosed in the sail that support the outboard trailing edge on high performance flexwing hang gliders to maintain the washout (twist) in the wing. This washout is essential in order to provide pitch stability, especially at low or negative angles of attack that may be encountered due to turbulence.
