You had the right idea, just didn't implement it well. If you keep running down that street until you see a checkpoint to the left, all you have to do is turn right around the sharp comer of the building right under the Uber Gun, go a bit farther to a tower where a Nazi is standing watch, climb it, stealth kill him, then climb the building right where you turned around the sharp corner. It takes you to right under the gun's platform where you can plant a charge unseen.

yeah i just fucked it up so many times that i just went past that little barrier near where he climbed up and there is a guard tower beside the turret. blast the shit out of it with the launcher and then i fell from the tower and it saved the mission inches from my death on the ground and bam mission completed

After several failed attempts, I found it much easier to just sneak around to the AA gun, kill the three guys there, then use the AA gun to blast the Big Gun (and the technician) to hell!
