So my Vizsla loves to do what he's told (most of the time) and is excited to interact. Vizsla's are overall very energetic dogs, and either you train them to channel their energy for good (i.e. commands) or else they will use their power for evil (run around crazily). I ran into my dog's sister at a beach, and she was crazy. Her owner had to use one of those collars with spikes to control her -- because, as the owner told me, she doesn't have the strength to be disciplined and train the dog because she feels bad for her dog. Yet she has to resort to a torture device to walk her dog.

I just trained my dog to heal, and I just walk around without a leash most all places, and he just listens to my verbal commands.

Anyhow, here are some random standard tricks or commands. Nothing terribly special.

  • Oh, I put his poop bag dispenser on his collar for the video because I thought it was funny.

  • It's got his name and my contact info on the collar. His name is Kepler. Named after the astronomer Johanes Kepler. He's spoiled, can do almost anything he wants, but there are rules that he can not break. If he goes into the street without a person he gets the SEVERELY punished. Only happened 2 times. Important as I never use a collar with him, just verbal commands. If you throw a ball for him, and it goes into the street, he stops at the curb. Same with chasing birds.

  • @thethereza How did you train Kepler to avoid streets without a person with him? Seems like that would take a lot of discipline.

  • @ciroccostones It's all about signal to noise, as I said in my earlier message. Just make sure he realizes that it's beyond wrong to enter the street without me. It also helps to have a smart dog capable of comprehending. You also reinforce it by playing with him on the sidewalk and occasionally throwing the toy in the street - then rewarding him for not going after it.

  • @thethereza Yeah, I'm going to be looking at a vizsla next week, and might have the chance to train a dog for my dad in the future; I never thought about training them to stay away from the street, that's handy, at least when you're with them. Anyway, another question if I may, just out of curiosity: how long did you work on this with your vizsla until he understood it?

  • @ciroccostone puppy school, then a couple private lessons which helped me a lot and lots of patience and consistency - which is what i see lacking in all the others at the park. dunno how long it took, but vizslas are fast to learn as long as your consistent.
