Alrighty then - so here is a video on how I organize my own genealogy. This video was created to show you my method and the importance of finding a method that works for you. Remember - that with organizing information - it has to be organized in a way that works for you. Sometimes not one specific way will work for you.
Hope you enjoy! And as always - I LOVE the comments you guys leave me. Thank you so much!

GREAT video! It's nice to see a young person interested in genealogy. What or who got you started? I wish my filing cabinet was that organized. :o( And yes, I just said today that I needed another binder. It will make binder number 5. I'm slowly moving towards e-files. The binders are beginning to be a hassle. Thanks for the video.

Thanks. My Aunt is the one who got me interested in genealogy - and long story short I've been bitten by the genealogy bug ever since.
Congrats on getting another binder! By the way - be careful on the e-files, make sure that you update them a bunch, back everything up, and that other family members know how to access the information (I know it sounds morbid, but we won't be around forever and we want our descendants to be able to discover our research)

I'm a bit surprised to see a young genealogist so focused on paper. I got into genealogy 35 years ago and set up a similar system. As a consequence, I have a large inventory of paper. So, now, I'm (slowly) digitizing everything onto independent drives so that my kids will be able to keep their family history in a desk drawer. This doesn't work for artifacts, of course, but I think the sheer volume of records causes many to be lost. Less interested heirs don't want to deal with this stuff.

I can't tell you how important it is, whether it's from your grands & great grands or aunts/uncles, great aunts/uncles, cousins, etc. I have a cousin in his 70's & I will never forget him saying, "If I could only ask my Granddaddy one question, it would be, 'Who were your grandparents?'" That simple question would have allowed him to find a missing link. Bad ancestors round out human families. Everyone has black sheep so don't avoid researching those. They turn out to be the most interesting.

I'm so glad to see a young lady interested in genealogy. Welcome to a lifelong passion! Being organized is essential & you are on the right track. Since you are so young, I hope you have access to your grandparents, great grands. Be sure to ask lots of questions & listen to their stories. Either use a digital recorder or jot notes down in a notebook whenever you get them talking.

Nice job organizing your files. I use 4 binders for each of my grandparnets though i worry about losing all the files to a house fire so I place my books and pictures in a safe for future reference. I liked your idea of having seperate folders for those individuals who have a lot of information tied to them. Great job I might incorporate that idea into my binders. And love the color codes too. AlsoIsave files to disks for the age of computers. :)

Great video young lady..it's really nice to see a young person take up an interest in thier family history..wish I had done that when I your age..I waited until it was too late to do serious research on my own kin...when my grandmother was still alive...she remembered a lot of family history..but never wrote it down on paper guess she'd figured no one would be interested..anyways..keep up the good work!
