HIV/AIDS Research at Emory University

As an international leader in HIV/AIDS vaccine research, Emory University has more than 50 scientists focused on developing an effective vaccine for this challenging disease. Research at the Emory University Center for AIDS Research, the Emory Vaccine Center and its Hope Clinic, Yerkes National Primate Research Center, and Emory University School of Medicine ranges from basic research in the laboratory to preclinical studies in animals to human clinical trials to a biotech start-up.

Background

The Emory University Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is pleased to serve as local Atlanta host for AIDS Vaccine 2010, sponsored by the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise. (See related video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQvdMqgLQf8).

AIDS 2010 is scheduled for Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, 2010. This annual international conference brings together scientists, community advocates, funders and policy makers from around the world to hear cutting edge scientific results, exchange new ideas, educate future leaders and engage a diverse community of scientists in the quest for an HIV vaccine.

AIDS Vaccine 2010 will feature daily plenary presentations by leading researchers, clinicians and community advocates, and oral and poster presentations of hundreds of research papers addressing every aspect of HIV vaccine development and testing. The conference is expected to attract more than 1,000 researchers, clinicians and community advocates from around the world to Atlanta.

Eric Hunter, PhD, Georgia Research Alliance eminent scholar and co-director, Center for AIDS Research at Emory University, will chair AIDS Vaccine 2010 with support from the following co-chairs: James Curran, MD, MPH, dean, Rollins School of Public Health and co-director, Center for AIDS Research, Emory University; Carlos del Rio, MD, Hubert professor and chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health, Rollins School of Public Health and co-director, Center for AIDS Research, Emory University; and Harriet Robinson, PhD, senior vice president of research and development, GeoVax, former director, division of Microbiology and Immunology, Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Emory University.

@Mandy75Paris, I too feel that animals are treated cruelly for the sack of human needs. Understand that Be are very sympathetic to animals that we use and we don't use animals for un-necessary reasons. All this is only for the welfare of Human. So kindly co-operate us in the path of protecting our next generation.

@Lee7676, Thank you very much, We have estimated that 33.2 million people lived with the disease worldwide, and that AIDS killed an estimated 2.1 million people, including 330,000 children. Every day there are newer infections (~200/Day). Vaccines available at various trials needs to be tested further and we are working hard towards making it possible. Thank you for recognizing us.
