I only need to use a ladder like this about two or three times a year and borrowing one can be a pain. Paying $200 or more for something like this was out of the question, so I built my own for 1/10 the cost. All that is needed is 2 X 4s and deck screws. The only tools are a saw, hammer, and chisel.

I searched the internet for some good plans and found only a couple. There's probably a good reason for that. Following those instructions, I would have needed skills and tools I don't possess. I just needed a down a dirty devise to get me on the roof a couple times a year.

This is how I built mine. If you wish to build one, you do so at your own risk. Like your mother said "If you break your leg, don't come running to me". Besides, I can't even afford to buy a $200 ladder. Suing me for your own misfortune is futile. I cannot be responsible for your skill level or materials used. Do not try this at home bla bla bla. Get it!?! This is a project for someone who has a need but not the cash and isn't going to let a little risk of injury or death scare them off.

This video was made with a less than $100 Vado camera and free software. Don't let excuses keep you from posting your ideas to You Tube. Have a wonderful day! :)

  • I would be careful of taking big notches out of the side rails, cause it greatly weakens the over-all strength of the ladder. Initially it would be fine, but over time the side rails will snap, injuring the user. It's well known to attach the 2x4's to the outer edge pre-drilling the holes first, then use cleats / or shims to bridge the gaps between the rungs / stairs. That way has been proven to stand the test of time.

  • @Aglassact77 Good points. I encourage anyone to make a video showing a better easier way or make a sturdier safer ladder with common tools and inexpensive parts. It's all about sharing knowledge and helping each other out. Thanks for the comment. :)

  • I wouldnt have thought to take notches out of em like that... Such a simple idea, and great build by the way. Its definitely worth the time making tools, and always fun.

  • @jm8907 I was shocked 12' ladders cost so much. I just needed one for a few days and didn't want to bother trying to borrow one. It was kind of a duh moment when I figured out how to notch it. I still have it and have used it many times since. Thanks for taking time to comment.

  • If the cat trusts it, its safe

  • @garryentropy The cats love it. I believe they think I built it for them to play on. :)

  • Thank you for the nice comment, and professional attitude. I can tell you've been at this a long time Fender. Keep making good videos man, and God Bless.

  • nice ladder

  • @FenderGibsonWashburn Yeah, no problem. I just need a ladder so I can take a few out of reach branches off a tree in the backyard to hang a tire swing on for when the family comes over. Also, I might use it to get on the roof in the winter to knock snow and ice off. Theres no way I'm paying for a ladder though, even if I had the money for it. lol. I love Youtube though for the fact that I can easily find free plans and ideas to help myself out a bit. so, Thanks for uploading your video!

  • Been wondering how to notch a 2x4 for several years effectively, thank you!

  • @garryentropy Thanks for sharing. I will be making a ladder soon.

  • looks good.. might have to take this up as a weekend project.
