Could be overkill, but if you had the resources wouldn't you rather use three mic's then have to redo everything because the mic placement ended up being terrible. also gives you a lot more options during the mix. They used Peter's studio so he owns everything, I would use whatever I had too...

I found this band on some thrash torrent, one song among other. Darkane's Godforsaken Universe stood out the most. Great sound, really great. You can tell they are inspired by both Meshuggahs style and sound. Cool.

Yeah, I know now. Didn't see that they were using triggers also, and 3 mics per tom would be kinda overkill.

One mic for every drum, sometimes more than one (snare drum for instance usually has one top and one bottom). Overhead mics for the cymbals, room mics.
They also use trig mics, which is a sensor mic that you press against the drum head and picks up the vibrations from the head. Those vibrations are converted to midi signals that controls a drum synth which is mixed with the acoustic sound, to enhance the sound of every drum. Each and everyone of those trig mics get it's own channel.
