I was given a copy of a poem written by John Yeaw a few years ago. It was passed on to me by John's sister Wendy and she suggested that I might try to do something musical with the verse. It's been condensed a lot and edited a bit so the lyrics now are as shown below.
A Child's Prayer
When I was a child, awake in my bed
In the stillness of night, in the midst of the dark
I lay and beheld deep dreams in my head
And I prayed that in life I would leave a small mark
I would not be rich, did not look for fame
But I would be gracious, truthful and king
One among many who carried my name
I hoped I could somehow leave goodness behind
Chorus:
So remember me not for the folly of life
The plateaus and peaks, which all stood in my way
Remember the child, once awake in the night
Who thought of the future, and started to pray
But life is a vapor that's soon gone away
While I pursued folly and just lived a lark
Still I can hope that maybe one friend will say
That in spite of it all I did leave a mark
When my days are over and I'm gone from this place
There are others behind who have shared the same road
I hope that somehow I've helped with the race
And maybe they'll say "He was driven by good"
Chorus:
So remember.........
Repeat last two lines
