@Yiggyski Jet fuel, a hydro carbon, is stored solar energy. In the very very near future solar collectors will more than exceed the current 14%-18% efficiency and batteries with much higher energy densities and lighter weights are already in production. Composite air frames are already on the market and being flown. The electric ducted fan industry has produced units with thrust comparable to similar sized jet turbines. It all comes down to power to weight ratio.

It might produce enough power to run a cigarette lighter so the pilot could enjoy a decent smoke if you charged it the day before.
As for enough power to run the engines forget it. Of course that's if an electrical equivalent could be produced to the jet engine which is impossible.
Solar powered airship may have future though.

Sorry I just deleted someones comment by mistake.
I would like to say that this idea would reduce fuel usage not just while the plane is flying but while charging when stationary on the airfield.
