In this clip, fictitious, watered-down pseudo-western-swing act Jimmy Wakely & the Sunshine Girls perform "You Are My Sunshine."

Jimmy Wakely was a Hollywood B-Western personality. With his career zenith during the studio system, Wakely would star in cowboy matinees and be featured in a comic book series.

"You are my Sunshine," one of the most covered songs of it's day, is arranged here with an early manufactured pop sensibility. Including a Western swing rhythm section, Andrews Sisters' styled harmonies, and a crooner leading a very stiff Hollywood studio orchestra, the arranger has achieved a quintessential triumph in banality.

  • Hi everybody! I'm Jimmy Wakely's granddaughter. I love this video. It is SO nice to see that other people love it, too! He was a wonderful singer. I loved him and I still miss him. We all do! I think Star of Hope is probably my favorite. I like the version where my grandmother ("Mama") sings with him. I wish that he would receive more recognition today for his singing.

  • sadly. Swing isnt the fashion anymore. I wish it was

  • Yes I'm 81 I remember him well.

  • @sarahinez04 You should be very proud of your grandfather. I only discovered JW just recently & I was immediately impressed with him. A year or so ago I fell in love with the old westerns & TV shows and since I'm a music lover and was a singer myself I gravitated to the music that was assoc. with it. I've just bought a few Mp3 recordings of him and hope to have more. Mr. Wakely reminds me of Bing Crosby, but he's very distinctive when he's in full throat. Actually, I like JW much better.

  • Excuse my ignorance, or rather my emotional reprise..

But was this the other side of the world when thousands were being murdered by the Nazis in Europe. This freaks me out... Look how happy these people are.

A cold chill runs down my spine as I write this message.

  • It has now been proven that Jimmie Davis did not write this song.

  • @sarahinez04 Hi there, may i ask?
