One observation: it's difficult to center clay if you yourself are not centered.

It's no secret around here that you are my pottery hero! I want to study each of your videos, they are all so helpful.

@peaceloveandoranges yup not easy - if with fast you are referring to the speed of the wheel, the faster you spin it the less force you need to apply to centre the clay. if you are talking about how fast he gets it centered, yup - he's good! my teacher is also super fast - it's all in the practice, like Simon says - give it a go!

I find I have more problems centering and opening smaller amounts of clay, this clip is going to be of great help. Can't wait to get to the studio tomorrow.

Great video's, i appreciate the narrative. How important is the coning of the clay in the centering process. I have been trying to center without coning (not having great results

Cone it up then press it down into itself ...helps to make the clay more submissive . SL

The only thing I would add is that beginners often make the mistake of thinking the clay is centered and then quickly taking their hands away and knocking the mass off center in the process. If you soflty and slowly come away from the clay you not only do not risk off centering it but you can feel easily if it is on center or not. Once you have centering down you have learned not to knock the clay about but when beginning this is very helpful.

yes you are correct, good point ...very important to release the grip slowly when you perceive the clay to be centered...thanks & regards SL

sorry I dont think I replied to your question ....
from a month ago ...the clay is a stoneware body ,grey in colour which when fired in reduction changes to a yellowy /toasty colour depending where it is in the kiln.regards SL
