Monkey Electrocution

I was in downtown Quepos, Costa Rica on February 17, 2011 when I heard some monkeys screaming. I saw a squirrel monkey being electrocuted as it jumped on the power lines. The monkey died. A woman picked it up, put it in her purse and drove away on her moped. Moments later, the second of three monkeys jumped on to the power line also. They both survived. As you can see at the end of the video, the electrocuted monkey had to deal with a car almost running it over and a stray dog chasing it off.

It happens daily and is very horrific, between the years of 1997 and 2008 Costa Rica lost over 50% of it's monkey's! The main cause for this was electrocution from contact with these uninsulated power lines.

There is a petition to prevent the electrocution of Costa Rican wildlife by implementing policy and law to insulate the electrical grid in the country.
